The daffs have surfaced, the blossom has bloomed and we’re basking in an extra hour of daylight. This can mean only one thing…spring has finally sprung.

Everything fur-lined and fleecy can be vacuum packed and stowed away, making room for the fresh and flesh-baring looks of spring/summer. Exfoliator and fake tan at the ready, get prepared for high-thigh hemlines, sheer panels and pure whites.

The mood for spring is luxurious, ethereal and nude. Well, nude in the white, cream and vanilla sense at least. Colours are very tonal and innocent, whether they are neutrals or soft sorbets in dusty pinks, lilacs or sky blues. Micro or floor-length dresses should be fluid in fine jersey or tulle with Grecian draping or pin tucks a-plenty.

The nude colour palette keeps tailored looks spring fresh, while relaxed styles take the rigidity out of suiting without sacrificing any of the sharpness. Pair a brilliant white longline boyfriend blazer with leather leggings to soften the look la Kate Moss. Or channel Sarah Jessica Parker on the red carpet by styling over girly lace or floral outfits for a sharper edge.

Lace can be a bit pearls and moth balls, but nevertheless a part of the return to innocence. Update the look for 2010 by layering a neutral shade with cobweb knits and sheers. The racy underwear-as-outerwear trend sees basques and corsets make an appearance in lace and silk with sheer panelling, teamed with big briefs (yes, really) or mini crinoline skirts.

Amongst the delicate prettiness of the season, somehow a look that has been ridiculed for a decade has reared its head – double denim. Ensure the denims are at opposite ends of the colour spectrum, so wear a boyfriend denim shirt in stonewash with black skinny jeans, or a dark blue fitted shirt with light blue boyfriend jeans.

Layering is an easy way to introduce some of the season’s bold digital prints into your wardrobe. The trend is to clash multiple prints in one outfit, but to make it work keep prints in the same colourway. This is easy to do with ikat prints, plaids, stripes, florals or polka dots. Think global traveller by teaming earthy tones with muted plaids, or ikat prints with contrasting border patterns or contrasting pockets. Harem pants are an ideal vessel for outlandish prints on silk or cotton.

To channel the casual trend this spring dip into luxe sportswear, an ber comfortable trend that works from day into night. Jersey jogging bottoms have been given the designer treatment in slim styles with oversized cuffs. Choose a soft sweat in grey or black for a more flattering look, but always team with heels otherwise it becomes more gym than Saint-Germain.

Alternatively, silk harem pants with feature cargo pockets are a fresh take on the relaxed trouser shape. Or simply roll-up the hem on a pair of khaki or beige cotton chinos. Whatever your trouser of choice, make sure the hem isn’t longer than the ankle, 7/8 is the length du jour. Bare those ankles and pray for the sun to make an appearance.

Spring is about combining; it is about combining colors, different types of hues; black and white, turquoise and greys; It is about combining wools and lighter fabrics….and maybe a tailored look with a less tailored look, a jacket with a light trousers, cropped or not.

Black and white are colors on both ends of the color spectrum. They are colors which can signify or mean a type of beginning and spring is about beginning, and spring is about patterns too, about contrast between colors, fabrics which lean more towards the winter feel/look and colors, fabrics which lean towards summer. Spring fashion is about lightness but as spring follows on from winter, an element of winter can co-exist in the spring look e.g. the black color, the black hues; So too with summer also. The grey/white hues can signify a type of winter feel and this white can co-exist with a yellow to create a spring look; Also turquoise and colors like coral, champagne pink and blues.

So now there is that subdued pink champagne which is an interesting spring color because if one thinks of reds as the colors of summer, then lighter reds or pinks embody the spring look and here there is pink champagne, You can have the pink champagne top with washed denim jeans…and spring is probably the first season where jeans can be worn to create a look. Maybe in winter, coats were worn over jeans but now jeans are worn to be seen and felt and a light washed denim jeans with suitable top can create a spring look.

The spring look can be about street wear because now the air is light and springy and there is more fashion to be seen on the streets and thus street wear fashion is spring fashion. Jeans and all the accessories associated with jeans such as belts and footwear, boots for example are relevant and long chemise tops to create the svelte, lean look are still relevant too.

Spring is about natural colors, natural looks. See the pantone 2010 spring colors. They are all natural colors, natural subdued colors or hues. Streetwear has something natural but edgy about it too and overall the spring look has that edgy look associated with spring. Colors such as tomato puree and eucalyptus speak of something natural.
